Remich

Remich, Luxembourg

History

A small town on the Luxembourg Moselle with a riverside esplanade and wine cellars all around. Walk the promenade, then drive the wine road north or south through the vineyard villages.

Remich lies on the left bank of the Moselle, which forms the border with Germany here. At 5.29 square kilometres it is the smallest municipality in Luxembourg by area, with about 4,100 inhabitants. The settlement goes back to the Roman Remacum. In the 8th century the Frankish king Pepin the Short donated the royal estate of Remich to monasteries in Trier and Prüm. Parts of the medieval fortifications survive, including the Nikolaus Gate, a protected monument.

The Moselle was canalised in 1964 and has been navigable all year round since then, which encourages excursion traffic on the river. Remich is one of the best-known wine towns on the Luxembourg Moselle. Stroll along the riverside esplanade; about an hour is enough. Afterwards you can visit the wine villages of the Moselle valley. Carnival includes the custom of the Stréimännchen, in which a straw figure symbolises winter.
