St Barbara's Church

Kutná Hora, Czechia

History

A Gothic church above the town with a tent-like roof, flying buttresses and a vaulted interior, standing at the edge of a former silver-mining centre. Walk the statue-lined terrace toward the Jesuit College for the view over the valley.

The Church of St Barbara in Kutná Hora has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Construction began in 1388 and dragged on for more than five centuries until 1905, interrupted by, among other things, the Hussite Wars. The first master builder is thought to have been Johann Parler, a son of Peter Parler; when work resumed in 1481, Matěj Rejsek, Benedikt Rejt and Mikuláš Parler carried it on. The church is dedicated to the patron saint of miners and reflects the wealth of the silver-mining town.

Outside, double flying buttresses support the choir, and inside, eight chapels surround the chancel. Parts of medieval frescoes survive, showing religious scenes alongside scenes from the life of the mining town. The Jesuits later introduced Baroque elements. The building was originally planned on a larger scale than was finally built. Allow about one to two hours for the church and its surroundings.
