Trosky Castle

Troskovice, Czechia

History

Two ruined towers on basalt volcanic plugs, the unmistakable symbol of Bohemian Paradise. The climb from the car park is short but steep.

Trosky Castle, near Troskovice in the Liberec Region, stands on two basalt volcanic plugs. The Baba tower ("Old Woman") on the lower summit is 47 m high, and the Panna tower ("Maiden") on the higher one is 57 m. The castle was founded by Čeněk of Wartenberg in the second half of the 14th century; archaeological finds suggest it is older than its first written mention in 1396. The complex included living quarters, outbuildings and three rings of walls.

A staircase to the Baba tower was built in 1999–2000, and since 2024 there has been a new steel viewing platform at the top. The castle is a landmark of the Bohemian Paradise and lies about 10 km south of Semily. Opening hours vary by season and parts of the site may be closed (as of October 2026), so check in advance. Wear sturdy shoes for the climb from the car park, and allow one to two hours for your visit.
