Sighișoara Historic Centre
Sighișoara, Romania
A walled medieval citadel on a hill, with pastel townhouses, cobbled lanes and a clock tower you can climb for views over the rooftops. Park in the lower town and walk up; mornings are quietest.
The citadel of Sighișoara was founded in the 12th century by Transylvanian Saxon settlers; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 and stands as a testimony to some 850 years of Transylvanian Saxon history and culture. Its landmark is the 64-metre Clock Tower, a gate tower. The walls were built between the 14th and 17th centuries and originally had 14 towers, nine of which survive; they served as headquarters of various guilds. Sighișoara is regarded as the birthplace of Vlad III Dracula.
The old town is compact and can be explored on foot in two to three hours. A medieval festival is held in summer, when it is especially crowded; it is quieter early in the morning or in the evening.
