Sibiu Old Town and Large Square

Sibiu, Romania

History

The Large Square is the heart of a Transylvanian Saxon old town, lined with baroque facades and the 'eyes' of the attic windows. Walk on to the Lower Town and the Bridge of Lies; park outside the centre.

Sibiu, formerly Hermannstadt, was founded in the 12th century by Transylvanian Saxon settlers and is regarded as the largest and wealthiest of the towns founded by the Saxons. In 2007 it was European Capital of Culture. Most of the main sights lie around the Large Square (Piața Mare), which leads into the smaller Little Square (Piața Mică). Here stands the Brukenthal Palace with the Brukenthal National Museum, the oldest museum in Romania, opened to the public in 1817. The tower of the Lutheran cathedral is 73 metres high, and the Council Tower gives you an all-round view of the town.

Typical are the dormer windows that look like the “eyes” of the houses. According to a common explanation, the Liars' Bridge got its name from a mix-up with “Liegenbrücke” (“lying bridge”). Walk on from there into the Lower Town. Park outside the centre.
