Seven Mile Bridge

Marathon, FL

Views

Almost seven miles of open water on the Overseas Highway. The old bridge alongside is partly open to walkers.

The current bridge was built between 1978 and 1982, is 10.9 km (6.8 miles) long and consists of 440 spans of precast, prestressed concrete. Over Moser Channel it leaves 20 m (65 feet) of clearance for boats. Alongside stands the old bridge that Henry Flagler built from 1909 to 1912 for his Overseas Railroad; after the 1935 hurricane it was converted into a highway.

A 3.5 km (2.2-mile) section of the old bridge out to Pigeon Key has been restored and has been open to walkers and cyclists since January 2022. That makes about 7 km (4.4 miles) round trip; allow roughly an hour and a half on foot. Along the way you will often see rays, sea turtles, dolphins and pelicans. Because the bridge runs almost east–west, it is good for both sunrise and sunset. Next to the bridge in Marathon there is a free parking lot for up to 35 vehicles. A train also runs to Pigeon Key and its museum three times a day.
