Scala dei Turchi

Realmonte, Italy

Nature

A white marl cliff that steps down into the sea like a staircase. Go late in the day, when it glows against the blue water.

This stretch of rocky coast between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle lies between two sandy beaches and is made of white marl, formed from the shells of tiny foraminifera. It was laid down in the early Pliocene, after the Mediterranean refilled following the Messinian salinity crisis. The name recalls the Barbary pirates, known as “Turks”, who landed here. The spot also became famous through Andrea Camilleri's Montalbano novels.

The marl is fragile: in 2020 prosecutors seized the site because of erosion and vandalism, and in 2022 vandals daubed the rock with red paint. According to press reports, tickets are now sold only on site rather than online; visitors are let in in groups of 50 every 20 minutes, up to 1,800 a day, and FAI volunteers staff an information point (as of May 2026). As the rules have changed several times recently, check before you go and expect to wait. Pay car parks line the SP68 provincial road.
