Selinunte

The temples and acropolis of a Greek city spread above the sea, one of the largest archaeological parks in Europe. A small electric train links the areas.
According to tradition, Selinunte was founded by Greeks around 628 BC; the archaeological park covers some 270 hectares between the Modione and Cottone rivers. On the acropolis stands Temple C from the mid-6th century BC. Temple E, dating from around 460–450 BC, was re-erected using its original stones between 1956 and 1959. Temple G, the largest building at 113 × 54 m, was never finished. Many of the metopes are now in the Archaeological Museum in Palermo.
Allow at least three hours for a thorough visit, more to see every area; the East Hill and the Sanctuary of Malophoros are about 2 km apart. There is hardly any shade, and in July and August temperatures often top 35 °C – come in the morning or late afternoon. There is a car park at the main entrance on the SS115; there are no restaurants inside the park, but you will find them in neighbouring Marinella di Selinunte.
