Ribe

Ribe, Denmark

History

A very old town in southwest Jutland with crooked lanes, half-timbered houses and a cathedral rising over the marsh. Walk the old centre, climb the cathedral tower if open, and visit the nearby Wadden Sea area.

Ribe is regarded as the oldest town in Denmark. As early as the early 8th century it was a trading place, and coins are said to have been struck here around 720. Around 860 Ansgar asked for permission to build the first church in Scandinavia in Ribe. The cathedral was begun around 1150, probably on the site of an earlier building. Marks left by the storm flood of 1634 (the Burchardi flood) can be seen on its walls, and a flood column in the town commemorates it.

Today Ribe has a little over 8,000 inhabitants and lies not far from the Wadden Sea. Allow about half a day for a walk through the old town with its lanes and for the cathedral. Park at the edge of the old town and continue on foot.
