Koldinghus

Kolding, Denmark

History

A large royal castle on a hill in Kolding, partly ruined after a fire and rebuilt with modern interiors. Climb the tower for the view over the town and the fjord.

Koldinghus was founded in the 13th century. The oldest surviving part, the north wing, was built under King Christopher III between 1441 and 1448. In the winter of 1808 a fire broke out in the castle while Spanish soldiers under French command were quartered there, and it reduced the main buildings to ruins. From 1976 to 1993 it was secured and redesigned to plans by the architects Inger and Johannes Exner, and the project received the Europa Nostra Award in 1993.

Today Koldinghus is a museum with collections of furniture, church art, older Danish painting, ceramics and silver. The castle stands in the town of Kolding in south Jutland. Allow about two to three hours for a visit.
