Prague Castle

Prague, Czechia

History

A hilltop castle complex above the Vltava, with St Vitus Cathedral, courtyards and a lane of small houses inside the walls. Arrive when the gates open to avoid queues, and leave the car outside the centre, as access is limited.

With around 70,000 square metres, Prague Castle is regarded as the largest coherent castle complex in the world. Its beginnings go back to the late 9th century, when Prince Bořivoj had the Church of the Virgin Mary built. At its heart is St Vitus Cathedral, begun in 1344 and not completed until 1929; the Bohemian crown jewels are also kept there. In the Golden Lane, which dates from the 16th century, small houses line the castle wall.

Allow half a day for the courtyards, the cathedral and the lane. You can reach the castle by tram line 22 (stop Pražský hrad) or on foot from the Malostranská or Hradčanská metro station; you do not need a car. Visit as early in the day as you can, as it is usually very busy later on.
