The highest peak of the Jeseníky mountains, crowned by a broadcasting tower with an observation deck. Hike up from the Ovčárna area in clear weather; the summit can be windy and cold even in summer.
Praděd (Altvater) stands 1,491 m high and is the highest mountain in the Hrubý Jeseník range. It is regarded as the fifth-highest mountain in the Czech Republic and the highest peak in Moravia and Czech Silesia. The summit is dominated by a television transmitter tower, which contains a restaurant, a hotel and an observation platform. The area belongs to the Praděd National Nature Reserve, so please keep to the marked paths.
The most common route leads from Ovčárna along a paved road of about 4 km to the summit. The best time to walk is from May to October, when the paths are mostly free of snow and long views are possible. Choose a clear day, as the weather on the summit is often harsh. Karlova Studánka has cafés and accommodation. Allow about three hours for the ascent and descent.
