Szczeliniec Wielki

Karłów, Poland

Nature

The highest point of the Table Mountains, a plateau of eroded sandstone reached by several hundred stone steps from Karłów. A one-way trail winds through crevices and viewpoints; park in Karłów and pay the national park fee.

Szczeliniec Wielki (Great Table Mountain) is, at 919 m, the highest peak of the Table Mountains (Góry Stołowe) in Lower Silesia, close to the Czech border. The summit plateau is made of Upper Cretaceous sandstone, which erosion has cut into crevices, passages and rock mazes; the highest point is called "Fotel Pradziada" (Great-Grandfather's Armchair). From Karłów, some 665 to 680 stone steps lead up (depending on the source). At the top, a marked one-way circuit leads through rock alleys and to viewpoints. The PTTK mountain hut stands on the plateau.

Allow about one and a half to three hours for the ascent and the circuit. The national park (established in 1993) may regulate access at peak times, so it is worth visiting early in the day or outside the holidays. An entry fee is charged for the site in season. The rock alleys are narrow and stepped; wear sturdy shoes.
