Positano

Positano, Italy

Views

A vertical town of pastel houses above a beach on the Amalfi Coast. Parking is scarce and expensive; arrive early or by boat.

Positano climbs the steep hillside of the Amalfi Coast straight up from the beach. The Romans already came here to unwind: the MAR museum, opened in 2018, displays the remains of a 1st-century Roman villa. The town's landmark is the church of Santa Maria Assunta with its majolica-tiled dome. Besides the Spiaggia Grande there are quieter beaches such as Fornillo, Arienzo and Laurito, and 16th-century watchtowers line the coast.

Half a day is enough for the lanes, the church and the beach. Hikers arrive via the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) from Bomerano to Nocelle, the highest part of town. Coming by car is tricky: parking in town is scarce and expensive, while free spaces are found only up in Nocelle and Montepertuso, from where buses run down. It is easier to arrive on the SITA buses along the coast or by ferry from neighbouring towns and Capri. Some hotels offer parking for guests.
