In AD 79 an eruption of Vesuvius buried Pompeii under ash and lapilli. The excavation area covers around 66 hectares, of which about a third has still not been uncovered. Systematic excavations began in 1748 under Charles III of Bourbon, and the site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Sights include the Forum, the Via dell'Abbondanza, the amphitheatre, which could hold around 20,000 spectators, the House of the Vettii with its frescoes in Pompeian red, and the Lupanar.
The site is extensive, so allow several hours up to half a day. It had around 4 million visitors in 2024, so an early start in the morning is worthwhile. One entrance is the Porta Marina; check opening times and ticket rules in advance on the park's website.
