Orgosolo Murals
Orgosolo, Italy
A mountain village in central Sardinia whose walls are covered with murals on political and social themes. Walk the main street and side lanes at an easy pace, and treat the village with respect as these are people's homes.
Orgosolo is a mountain village in the Barbagia region of central Sardinia, not far from Nuoro. Its house walls are covered in murals, and in Orgosolo itself there are well over a hundred. According to Wikipedia, the first one was painted in 1969 by the Milan theatre group Dionisio and questioned Sardinia's role in Italian politics; later the teacher Francesco Del Casino drove the movement forward together with his pupils. Other sources give 1975 as the starting date. The early paintings deal with oppression and liberation; later came fascism, social inequality and world events such as the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and 9/11.
Take your time along the main street and the side lanes; one to two hours is enough. The walls belong to lived-in houses, so be respectful and park on the edge of the village.
