Cala Luna

A crescent of sand under limestone caves, reached by boat from Cala Gonone or on a four-hour coastal path.
The crescent-shaped bay in the Gulf of Orosei, about 700 m long, lies at the mouth of the Codula di Luna, a torrent that marks the boundary between the municipalities of Dorgali and Baunei. The sea has carved caves into the limestone, and oleander bushes grow behind the beach. In 1974 Lina Wertmüller shot scenes here for her film "Travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto" (internationally "Swept Away").
Boats run from Cala Gonone, Santa Maria Navarrese, La Caletta and Arbatax; from Cala Gonone they operate in the main season from July to September. On foot, a marked path leads from the Cala Fuili cove to Cala Luna in about 4 to 6 km; depending on the source, allow one and a half to just under two hours each way. There is a small bar on the beach and a restaurant nearby. The Grotta del Bue Marino, about 3 km away, can be reached by boat.
