Natural Bridge State Park, North Adams
North Adams, MA
A short walk leads to a marble gorge carved by meltwater, with a natural arch and smooth, fluted rock walls. Stay on the marked paths and railings, and bring a light jacket since the chasm stays cool even in summer.
Natural Bridge State Park in North Adams has a natural bridge of white marble that is unique in North America. The marble is more than 500 million years old, and the arch was carved by meltwater from the last ice age about 13,000 years ago. Marble was quarried here from 1810 to 1947; in the park you can still see the old quarry and a white marble dam from 1838, the only one of its kind in North America. Hudson Brook runs through the gorge, which includes Hudson Cave. Nathaniel Hawthorne visited the site in 1838.
The park covers 44 acres (about 18 ha) and has been a state park since 1985. Besides the gorge there are woodland trails. Allow about one to two hours. The park is open seasonally, from late May to mid-October according to the park authority (as of October 2026); check with the park authority, DCR, before you go.
