Oddities

A huge contemporary art museum in a 19th-century mill complex, with room-sized installations. Plan at least half a day.

MASS MoCA, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, opened in 1999 in North Adams on a 16-acre (6.5 ha) former factory campus. From the 1860s the site was home to the Arnold Print Works textile printers, which employed more than 3,000 people in 1905. From 1942 to 1985 the Sprague Electric Company made capacitors and components here, including parts for Gemini space missions; in the 1960s more than 4,000 people worked on the site.

Today the museum says it has about 300,000 square feet (28,000 m²) of gallery space, plus more than 75 performances a year. Long-term installations include Sol LeWitt wall drawings (through 2033) and works by Anselm Kiefer (through 2028; as of October 2026). The campus also hosts more than 40 businesses, along with places to eat and shops. Given its size, plan on at least half a day.
