National Archaeological Museum

Athens, Greece

History

One of the main collections of ancient Greek art, from Cycladic figures and Mycenaean gold to monumental bronzes. Plan a couple of hours, and consider coming right after opening to enjoy the halls in quiet.

The National Archaeological Museum stands on Patission Street in Athens' Exarchia district. It was founded in 1829 on Aegina under Ioannis Kapodistrias; the present neoclassical building went up between 1866 and 1889, with a first design by Ludwig Lange and later contributions from architects including Panagis Kalkos and Ernst Ziller. The collection runs from prehistory to late antiquity.

Highlights include Mycenaean gold finds with the so-called Mask of Agamemnon, Cycladic marble figures, the Antikythera Mechanism and the bronze found off Cape Artemision. The Egyptian collection numbers more than 6,000 objects. After a major refurbishment the museum reopened in July 2004; an underground extension is due to be finished by 2028 (as of October 2026). Allow several hours and focus on a few areas, such as the Mycenaean and Cycladic galleries. Arriving early in the day usually means quieter halls.
