Acropolis of Athens

Athens, Greece

History

The rocky hill above Athens crowned by the Parthenon and other classical temples, with wide views over the city. Arrive at opening time or late in the day, wear shoes with grip on the polished marble and bring water.

The Acropolis is a limestone plateau of around 3 hectares rising about 150 m above sea level over Athens. Under Pericles, the classical buildings were raised in the 5th century BC: the Parthenon (447–432 BC), the Propylaea as a monumental gateway (from 437 BC), the Erechtheion with its caryatids (421–406 BC) and the small temple of Athena Nike. The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Extensive restoration has been under way since 1975, with fragments being put back together, so parts of the site may be under scaffolding or closed off. The finds are complemented by the Acropolis Museum, which opened in 2009 right at the foot of the hill. Allow half a day for the hill and the museum together. Come at opening time or in the late afternoon, when it is less crowded and cooler, and bring water and sturdy shoes.
