Mount Battie, Camden Hills State Park
Camden, ME
A low summit above Camden with a stone tower and a sweeping view of the harbor, islands and Penobscot Bay. Drive the summit road or hike up from town, and come late in the day for softer light.
Columbus Buswell built a carriage road to the summit of Mount Battie in 1897 and soon afterward opened the Summit House hotel. After a forest fire in 1918 and the hotel's demolition in 1920, the Mt. Battie Association built a stone tower in 1921, designed by Parker Morse Hooper, as a World War I memorial to the men and women of Camden. A nearby plaque recalls that Edna St. Vincent Millay is said to have written her poem "Renascence" here. In 1948 the mountain became part of Camden Hills State Park.
From the summit you look out over Camden Harbor, Penobscot Bay and the islands, and on a clear day as far as Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park. A summit road built in the 1960s leads up; it may be closed from November 1 to May 1 depending on weather. According to the park, the Mount Battie Trail is 0.8 km (0.5 mile) long and takes about 45 minutes, with some steep stretches. The park has 108 campsites, some with electric and water hookups.
