History

A museum in Rockland devoted largely to art linked to Maine, including works by members of the Wyeth family. It is easy to pair with a walk along the harbor, so plan a relaxed half day in town.

The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland is devoted to American art, with a focus on Maine’s role in it. It opened in 1948 and traces back to a bequest from Lucy Farnsworth, daughter of a limestone industrialist; her home, the Farnsworth Homestead, is part of the museum. According to the museum, the collection includes almost 16,000 works, among them a significant collection by the sculptor Louise Nevelson. The Wyeth Center shows works by N. C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. The museum also operates the Olson House in nearby Cushing, which inspired Andrew Wyeth to paint several works, including “Christina’s World.”

Two to three hours make sense for the museum itself; with the Olson House and a stroll along the harbor, you will have a half day. Check opening days and season on the website before you go. The museum is downtown on Museum Street.
