The Cliffs of Moher stretch for about 14 km of coastline in County Clare, roughly 8 km as the crow flies. At Hag's Head, their southern end, they are about 120 m high, and they reach their highest point of 214 m north of O'Brien's Tower, which Cornelius O'Brien had built as a viewing tower in 1835. The layers of shale and sandstone formed 313 to 326 million years ago, and the cliffs are part of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark.
In the breeding season an estimated 30,000 pairs of birds from more than 20 species nest here, puffins among them. On clear days you can see the Aran Islands in Galway Bay and the Twelve Pins in Connemara. The visitor centre, opened in 2007, is built into the hillside, and paths lead from it to accessible viewing platforms. Allow one to two hours. The coastal walk was closed in February 2025, and sections, especially in the south near Hag's Head, remain closed (as of October 2026). Check before you go.
