Galway Latin Quarter
Galway, Ireland
The pedestrian lanes around Quay Street and Shop Street, with street musicians, pubs and the medieval Spanish Arch beside the River Corrib. Leave the car at a car park on the edge of town and walk in, especially on busy weekends.
The Latin Quarter adjoins the Spanish Arch, one of the last surviving pieces of Galway’s medieval city wall, at the edge of the centre on the River Corrib, looking across to the Claddagh district. The arch owes its name to the city’s close trading links with Spain and Portugal. Just beyond it are the Galway City Museum and the Long Walk along the waterfront; in the quarter you will also find the Hall of the Red Earl and Kirwan’s Lane.
From there, Quay Street, a lively pedestrian street, leads into the centre. Street musicians shape the atmosphere, and pubs such as Tigh Neachtain are part of the quarter. Two to three hours are enough for a stroll with a museum visit. It is best to leave your car or motorhome in a car park on the edge of town and walk in, especially on busy weekends.
