Sveti Stefan
Budva, Montenegro
A walled fishing village on an islet joined to the shore by a sandbar. See it from the coast road.
Sveti Stefan lies about 6 km south-east of Budva. The small rocky island, roughly 12,400 m² in area, is joined to the mainland by a narrow spit of land known as a tombolo. The fortified settlement dates from the 15th century onwards; the Paštrovići, for whom it was the main town, came under Venetian protection in 1423. In the Yugoslav era the island was converted into a hotel resort, and the remaining residents moved to the mainland.
For road-trippers, Sveti Stefan is above all a photo stop. Anyone may walk along the causeway to the island's gate, and the skyline of narrow lanes and the pink-sand beach can also be admired from the shore. Allow one to two hours. The Aman resort reopened on 1 July 2026 after a closure of several years; the island itself remains reserved for hotel and restaurant guests and booked tours, and parts of the beaches are subject to access restrictions (as of October 2026). The Miločer park lies next door.
