Hundertwasserhaus

Vienna, Austria

Oddities

A residential block with wavy floors, colourful façades and trees growing from the windows, designed as a rejection of straight lines. It is lived in, so view it from the street, and visit the nearby village-style shopping courtyard.

The Hundertwasser House in Vienna's third district was built between 1983 and 1985. The artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser designed it together with the architects Josef Krawina and Peter Pelikan. The complex, on the corner of Kegelgasse and Löwengasse, contains around 50 apartments; the façade is decorated with colourful mosaics and ornaments. More than 200 trees and shrubs grow on the balconies and roof terraces, making the house a green oasis in the middle of the city. The idea behind it was to bring people and nature together.

It is a lived-in apartment building and can only be viewed from the outside. You can look at it from the street at any time. The "Hundertwasser Village", with shops, is on Kegelgasse, and the Kunst Haus Wien is nearby. Half an hour is enough for a visit; try to come early, before the tour groups arrive.
