Devín Castle

Bratislava, Slovakia

History

The ruins of a fortress on a cliff where the Morava flows into the Danube, on the Austrian border just outside Bratislava. Walk the ramparts for river views; the site is exposed, so bring a jacket on windy days.

Devín Castle stands on a cliff 212 metres above sea level at the confluence of the Danube and the Morava, right on the border with Austria. The site has been settled since the Neolithic; the first written mention possibly dates back to 864, and the stone castle is documented from 1271. In 1809 retreating Napoleonic troops blew it up. Before 1989 the area lay in a restricted zone along the Iron Curtain.

You can walk through walls, stairways and courtyards, see the Maiden Tower, the best-known photo spot, and view archaeological finds in the museum, including the remains of a 1st-century Roman tower and of a pre-Romanesque church from the 9th century. Check the current opening times before you visit. Allow one to two hours and take a jacket on windy days, as the site is exposed.
