Hollókő Old Village

A small hill village of whitewashed timber-framed houses in the Palóc folk tradition, protected as a living heritage site, with a ruined castle above. Park outside the village and walk in; weekends in season are busy.
Hollókő lies in the Cserhát Mountains, about 91 km north-east of Budapest. The village was built in the 13th century and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 because it preserves rural life from before modern farming. The 67 protected houses along the main streets are built in the Palóc style: timber frames with whitewashed walls and porches beneath wide overhanging roofs. The last major fire was in 1909. Above the village stands the ruined castle, first mentioned in 1310 and abandoned in 1683.
Visit St Martin's Church, the castle ruins and several small museums, such as the Village Museum and the Postal Museum. Two to three hours are enough for the village. Park outside and walk in; at weekends in season it is often crowded.
