History

A pretty riverside town of cobbled lanes, pastel Baroque houses and small galleries, easy to reach from Budapest. Leave the car at the edge and walk up to the church terrace for views over the old town's roofs.

Szentendre lies about 20 km north of Budapest, between the capital and the Pilis-Visegrád Mountains. The town's name is first recorded in 1146. After the mass arrival of Serbian refugees in 1690, Serbian, Dalmatian and Hungarian influences shaped the town. An artists' colony has existed since 1929, and today there are numerous galleries and museums, including collections devoted to Károly Ferenczy and Béla Czóbel.

The old town has cobbled streets and Baroque houses. Allow half a day. The HÉV suburban railway (line H5) runs frequently from Budapest, so you can easily leave the car behind. It is very busy at weekends, so come early.
