High Point Monument
Sussex, NJ
A stone obelisk on the highest ridge in New Jersey, reached by a short drive and walk, with views over forest, farmland and distant hills. Choose a clear day, and note that the tower interior opens only at set times.
High Point, in the Kittatinny Mountains, is the highest elevation in New Jersey at 1,803 feet (about 550 m). The obelisk on top, a war memorial, was built between 1928 and 1930 and is 220 feet (about 67 m) tall; the land was donated in 1923 by Colonel Anthony R. Kuser and his wife, Susie Dryden. From the top, the view reaches the Pocono and Catskill Mountains. The park grounds were designed by the Olmsted Brothers, sons of Central Park designer Frederick Law Olmsted.
High Point State Park (about 15,400 acres, or 6,200 ha) offers hiking, cross-country skiing, camping and fishing, and the Appalachian Trail runs along the ridge. Access is via NJ Route 23. Choose a clear day for the climb; an hour or two is enough for the monument and its surroundings, longer if you hike.
