Gordes
Gordes, France
A stone village stacked on a cliff in the Luberon, best seen from the viewpoint on the road coming from Cavaillon. Park at the edge and climb the steep lanes on foot, with good shoes.
Gordes stands at 373 m in the Luberon and dates back to Gallo-Roman times. Its stone houses crowd up to the château, which was built in the 11th century and remodelled in the Renaissance. In the surrounding area are the Cistercian abbey of Sénanque, ringed by blooming lavender in summer, and the Village des Bories, with dry-stone huts near the entrance to the village.
The best-known photo spot is the viewpoint on the D15 towards Sénanque, ideally early in the morning. Leave your vehicle on the edge of the village and walk the steep, cobbled lanes in sturdy shoes. Tuesday morning is market day, when the car parks fill up especially early. April to October is the most pleasant time; September is considered a good compromise between weather and crowds.
