Ochre Trail
Roussillon, France
A short trail through old ochre quarries in every shade from yellow to blood red. It takes under an hour, but do not wear white.
The Sentier des Ocres lies south of the village of Roussillon on the D105 departmental road. The site shows the traces of some two centuries of ochre mining in former quarries: cliffs in many shades of colour, with trees growing among them, that change with the daylight. You can choose between a short loop of about 30 minutes and a longer one of about 50 minutes. The route includes around 350 steps, so it is not suitable for pushchairs or for people with reduced mobility.
Dogs are allowed on a lead. Opening times depend on the season and the weather, so check them before you visit. The light is especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon, and it is usually less crowded then. The ochre dust can stain shoes and clothing, so it is best not to wear anything light-coloured.
