A 2,429 m pass with hairpins above the Rhône Glacier. Usually open June to October.
At 2,429 m, the Furka Pass links Realp in the Urseren valley (canton of Uri) with Gletsch and Oberwald in Valais. The road winds through the high mountains in countless hairpin bends. It became famous in 1964, when scenes from the James Bond film "Goldfinger" were shot here. On the Valais side, the striking historic Hotel Belvédère sits in a hairpin bend.
Nearby, a new ice grotto is cut into the Rhône Glacier every year, open roughly from June to mid-October; an educational trail and viewpoints overlook the glacial lake and the source of the Rhône. The pass road is closed in winter and, depending on snow, is usually open from June to October; even then, snow and cold are possible. All year round, car-carrying trains through the Furka Base Tunnel link the two valleys, and in summer the Furka Steam Railway runs with locomotives more than 100 years old.
