Susten Pass

A 2,224 m pass on road 11, built in the 1940s with tunnels and wide curves, looking over the Stein Glacier and its lake. Open roughly June to October; car parks at the summit tunnel and at Steingletscher.
The Susten Pass links Innertkirchen in the Bernese Oberland with Wassen in the canton of Uri. Road 11 was built between 1938 and 1945 and opened on 7 September 1946, originally partly for military reasons. The summit lies at around 2,260 m; the roughly 300 m summit tunnel runs at 2,224 m. The view of the Stein Glacier on the Bernese side is especially impressive.
The road is usually open only from June to October (as of October 2026). From Innertkirchen it is about 27 km with a climb of almost 1,600 m; from Wassen it is roughly 18 km. Check current road conditions before you set off.

- Sustenpass (2,224 m). Usually open June–October; outside that window the road can be closed by snow. Alternative: Go round via Lucerne and the Gotthard road tunnel.
