Fish Creek

Fish Creek, WI

History

A harbor village on Door County's bay shore with a walkable center of shops, galleries and cafes. Stay for sunset over the water, and try a local fish boil if you want the regional specialty.

Fish Creek lies in Door County on Green Bay and is part of the Town of Gibraltar. The village borders Peninsula State Park. The Native American settlement here was called "Ma-go-she-kah-ning," meaning "trout fishing." The first European family, Increase Claflin, arrived around 1844. The entrepreneur Asa Thorp is regarded as the founder; he built the first dock in 1855. From 1853 the community grew through logging and fishing, and it has had a post office since 1866.

The Alexander Noble House of 1875 is considered the village's oldest unaltered house and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The center is small and walkable; shops, galleries and cafes are close together. One to two hours are enough for a stroll, a little more if you spend an evening by the water. It is crowded in high season, so arrive early. A visit combines easily with nearby Peninsula State Park, which also has campgrounds.
