Eastern State Penitentiary

Philadelphia, PA

History

A vast, crumbling prison with long cell blocks, built as a radical experiment in solitary reflection. Walk the corridors with the audio tour, and dress for drafty, unheated halls.

Eastern State Penitentiary opened in Philadelphia in 1829 and is regarded as the model for modern prison design. The architect John Haviland designed a radial complex with cell blocks fanning out from a central hall; the "Pennsylvania System" of solitary confinement inspired more than 300 prisons worldwide. Inmates were meant to reflect in isolation. Prisoners included Al Capone (1929-30) and Willie Sutton, who took part in a tunnel escape in 1945. The prison closed in 1971; today it is preserved as a "stabilized ruin," has been open as a museum since 1994 and is a National Historic Landmark.

Allow about two hours for the tour. The preserved decay is exactly what makes it compelling. The cell blocks are drafty, so dress accordingly. In fall the museum holds "Halloween Nights," when it is more crowded.
