Brandywine Creek State Park
Wilmington, DE
Rolling meadows and tulip-poplar woods along the Brandywine Creek, with trails that suit a short walk or a half-day hike. Spring wildflowers and autumn colors are the best seasons to come.
Brandywine Creek State Park lies in northern Delaware near Wilmington and covers about 385 hectares (950 acres). The land once belonged to the du Pont family's Winterthur estate and was used as a dairy farm; the park was established in 1965, and a donation added about 200 hectares (500 acres) in 1981. The park looks after four nature preserves, including Tulip Tree Woods, Freshwater Marsh and Flint Woods, which holds Delaware's first recognized old-growth forest.
More than 22 km (14 miles) of trails, including the Rocky Run Trail and the Greenway Trail, allow short strolls as well as a half-day hike. The Brandywine Creek Nature Center offers guided nature walks and bird programs. Anglers fish for bass in the creek and trout in Wilson's Run. Spring with its wildflowers and fall with its foliage are the loveliest seasons. The park is busy on weekends, so it pays to arrive early.
