Dinkelsbühl

Dinkelsbühl, Germany

History

A walled town on the Romantic Road whose intact ring of towers and gates encloses gabled houses and a large Gothic church. Walk the wall circuit in the evening, when day trippers have left and the streets are calm.

Dinkelsbühl lies on the Romantic Road between Würzburg and Füssen, and the road's association has had its office here since 1985. The former free imperial city (since 1274) has a town wall about 2.5 kilometres long enclosing roughly 33 hectares. Building began after 1372; the wall originally had 27 towers, in addition to four town gates. In the middle of the old town rises the Minster of St George, completed in 1499 and one of southern Germany's most important late Gothic hall churches.

Two to three hours are enough for the walk along the wall and the old-town lanes. In July, on the weekends before and after the third Monday, the Kinderzeche takes place, a festival recalling events of 1632 during the Thirty Years' War; the town is then much busier. If you arrive in the evening or early morning, the lanes are likely to be quieter.
