Cluj-Napoca Old Centre

Cluj-Napoca, Romania

History

Union Square is the hub of Transylvania's main university city, dominated by the Gothic St Michael's Church and ringed by cafés. Explore the side streets on foot and leave the car in a garage.

Union Square (Piața Unirii) measures 220 by 160 metres and is one of the largest squares in Romania. The centre of Cluj-Napoca spreads out from here. It was formerly called Nagypiac in Hungarian and Piața Mare in Romanian, meaning “Great Market Square”, to distinguish it from the smaller Kispiac, today's Museum Square. It is dominated by the Gothic St Michael's Church, whose 80-metre tower is the tallest church tower in Romania; it is the country's second-largest Gothic church and was built in two phases, 1316 to 1390 and 1410 to 1487.

On the square stands the monument to King Matthias Corvinus, and around it lie the former town hall, the National Art Museum in the Bánffy Palace, and the Josika and Rhédey palaces. Explore the side streets on foot and leave your car in an underground or multi-storey car park.
