Turda Salt Mine

Turda, Romania

Oddities

A former salt mine turned into an underground park, with a Ferris wheel and rowing boats on a lake deep below ground. It stays cool all year; bring a jacket and expect queues at weekends.

The first written record of the Turda salt mine dates from 1 May 1271; mining continued into the early 20th century and ended in 1932. During the Second World War it served as a shelter, and it has been open to visitors again since 1992. The vast chambers are the highlight: a panoramic lift descends into the Rudolf Mine (42 m deep, 80 m long, 50 m wide), while the Theresa Mine, where salt was extracted from 1690 to 1880, holds an underground lake and a “salt waterfall”.

Allow roughly two to three hours for your visit. It is usually cooler underground than outside, so bring a jacket. To avoid long queues, come on a weekday or early in the day; tickets can be bought online in advance.
