Cedarburg

Cedarburg, WI

History

A small town north of Milwaukee with a downtown of old stone buildings, a historic mill and a covered bridge nearby. Come for a leisurely stroll among the shops and cafes; autumn weekends are especially busy.

Cedarburg lies about 20 miles (32 km) north of Milwaukee. German and Irish immigrants founded the town in the 1840s and harnessed the water power of Cedar Creek for mills; the settler Frederick Leuning gave it its name in 1843. Cedarburg received its city charter in 1885. The city preserves more than 200 historic buildings. The Cedar Creek Settlement, a restored woolen mill from 1864 (the Wittenberg Mill), now houses shops, studios and restaurants.

The year brings the Winter Festival, the Strawberry Festival, the Wine and Harvest Festival and an Oktoberfest. During such events the downtown is very crowded, especially in fall; arrive early in the day. One to two hours are realistic for a stroll through the shops and cafes. Park on the edge of town and walk.
