Cape Kamenjak
Premantura, Croatia
A protected headland at the southern tip of Istria with rocky coves, low scrub and clear water, reached by a gravel track. Bring water and sun protection, as there is little shade, and explore on foot or by bike.
Kamenjak is the southern tip of Istria, about 10 km from Pula and connected to the village of Premantura. It is not a national park but a protected “significant landscape” (Donji Kamenjak and the Medulin Archipelago). More than 600 plant species have been recorded, including around 30 orchid species, along with woodland, grassland, garrigue and maquis. At Cape Grakalovac, dinosaur footprints from the Cretaceous are preserved in the limestone.
The peninsula is served by gravel tracks that can be explored on foot, by bike or by kayak; you can swim and snorkel in the rocky coves. Vehicle access is subject to rules and a fee that changes with the season, so check locally. Shade is scarce: bring water and sun protection and allow at least half a day.
