Euphrasian Basilica

Poreč, Croatia

History

A sixth-century basilica in the old town of Poreč, known for its Byzantine mosaics glowing in gold above the apse and for its atrium and baptistery. Dress modestly for entry and come in the morning for the best light on the mosaics.

The Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč was built from AD 553 under Bishop Euphrasius and replaced a dilapidated earlier church. Construction took about ten years, and the marble came from the coast of the Sea of Marmara. With its three apses, it is regarded as an early example of this form in Western Europe. Since 1997 the complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as an outstanding example of early Byzantine architecture in the Mediterranean. Earthquakes, including one in 1440, and fires made restoration necessary.

The complex includes an atrium with a colonnade, a baptistery, the bishop's residence and a 16th-century bell tower. The 6th-century mosaics have gold backgrounds and show, among other scenes, Christ with the Apostles and the Virgin and Child beside Euphrasius holding a model of the church. About an hour is enough for a visit. Dress appropriately for the place; mornings are usually quieter.
