Breitach Gorge

Oberstdorf, Germany

Nature

A narrow gorge cut deep into the rock near Oberstdorf, with a walkway attached to the cliff walls above the rushing river. Allow about an hour for the walk and dress warmly, as the gorge stays cool and wet.

The Breitach Gorge lies in the Allgäu at the mouth of the Kleinwalsertal near Tiefenbach, part of Oberstdorf. At up to 150 m deep, it is regarded as the deepest rock gorge in Central Europe. The path through the gorge is 2.5 km long. Its opening up was driven by the young pastor Johannes Schiebel of Tiefenbach: the first blasting took place on 25 July 1904, and the path opened on 4 July 1905.

The gorge formed only in the last 10,000 years after the Würm glaciation, as the Breitach cut through hard rock. At the lower entrance in Tiefenbach there is a visitor centre and plenty of parking; at the upper entrance near the Austrian border there is very little. Allow about one to two hours for the walk; it is cool and damp, so a jacket and non-slip shoes are sensible. Around 300,000 people visit each year, and it is quietest early in the day.
