Bergamo Città Alta

Bergamo, Italy

History

The upper town of Bergamo, enclosed by Venetian walls on a hill, with a compact medieval centre of squares and arcades. Park in the lower town and take the funicular up; walk the top of the walls for views over the plain.

The Città Alta of Bergamo is encircled by a ring of fortifications about 6 km long, which Venice had built from the mid-16th century. Bergamo belonged to the Republic of Venice from 1428 to 1797, and the walls were never besieged. In 2017 UNESCO added them to the World Heritage List as part of the "Venetian Works of Defence". Today they serve as a promenade with views over the lower town and the plain. A funicular takes visitors up through the old walls into the upper town.

The centre is Piazza Vecchia, with the Palazzo della Ragione and the Torre Civica, known as the "Campanone", which tolls 100 strokes every evening. Next door stand the cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Colleoni Chapel. The Rocca offers another viewpoint. The stracciatella ice cream flavour was invented in 1961 at the Café La Marianna.
