Bellagio
Bellagio, Italy
Stepped lanes and villa gardens where Lake Como’s three arms meet. Car ferries cross to Varenna and Cadenabbia.
Bellagio sits at the tip of a peninsula where Lake Como divides into its arms towards Como and Lecco. The old town is laced with steep stepped lanes, the "salite", such as the Salita Serbelloni; at its centre stands the Romanesque Basilica of San Giacomo, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. The gardens of Villa Melzi are planted with exotic trees, camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas, while the roughly 21-hectare park of Villa Serbelloni can be visited only on a guided tour. At the very tip of the headland, Punta Spartivento looks out across the lake to Varenna.
Allow at least half a day. With so many steps, the lanes are difficult for people with limited mobility. July and August are the busiest months; late May, June or late September are quieter. Car ferries link Bellagio with Varenna, Cadenabbia and Menaggio, making it easy to cross the lake. Passenger boats also run to Como.
