Monument Rocks

Monument Rocks, also called the Chalk Pyramids, are in Gove County in western Kansas, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Oakley on US-83. The chalk formations of the Niobrara Formation rise up to 70 feet (21 m), form towers and arches, and are about 80 million years old. They formed in the Western Interior Seaway, a sea that divided North America during the Cretaceous. The rock is rich in fossils. In 1968 Monument Rocks became the first site in Kansas designated a National Natural Landmark, and in 2008 it was named one of the "8 Wonders of Kansas" together with Castle Rock.

From US-83 you head east on several unpaved roads (distances given in sources vary); they are passable only in dry weather. The rocks stand on private land that the owners open to visitors without a permit and without an entrance fee. Climbing, fossil hunting, camping and open fires are prohibited, and there are no restrooms. The rocks are good for photos in golden evening light and for night-sky shots.
