Route description
Western Kansas was once the floor of a shallow inland sea, and its chalk is full of fossils. Start at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, then take I-70 west to Quinter and follow gravel roads south to Castle Rock, a lone chalk spire above small badlands.
The dirt roads to Castle Rock become impassable after rain, so check the forecast and do not take a large RV. Return to I-70 and continue to Oakley, whose small fossil museum is worth a stop, then drive about 25 miles south on US-83 and county roads to Monument Rocks.
Monument Rocks is a group of chalk pillars and arches up to 70 feet high, standing on private land that is open to visitors. A few miles west, Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park protects the largest chalk formation in Kansas, seen from trails along its rim.
Finish at Lake Scott State Park north of Scott City, a spring-fed lake in a small canyon with the ruins of El Cuartelejo pueblo. Spring and fall are best; summer is hot with little shade, and thunderstorms can turn gravel roads to mud.
