A village enclosed in twelve-pointed star-shaped ramparts near the Spanish border, besieged in the Napoleonic Wars. Walk round the top of the walls for the geometry.
Almeida lies about 7 km west of the Spanish border on the N332 and is enclosed by a twelve-pointed, star-shaped fortress in the style of Vauban's fortifications, built from the 17th century and extended in the 18th. The town is best known for 26 August 1810: during the siege in the Peninsular War, a French shell ignited the main powder magazine, and the explosion is said to have killed several hundred defenders and destroyed most of the town.
You enter the fortress through the double gates of São Francisco, after which you can walk along the ramparts. Only from above does the star shape become clear. The bombproof casemates house a military history museum; allow at least an hour for it. At the end of August, a multi-day historical spectacle commemorates the siege.
